Author: Jackie Troller

Jackie Troller is a professional snorkeling and freediving instructor and safety diver, primarily on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. Her passion for freediving began during an intermediate freediving course in 2012, where she learned to hold her breath for 4 minutes in just two days. From there, she eagerly became a freediving instructor. Her experiences as safety support for freediving competitors gives her students the assurance they need to safely explore their potential. Additionally, she has assisted with courses for Red Bull athletes, firefighters, big wave surfers, water rescue units, lifeguards, and government agencies. Jackie’s skilled background as a swim instructor, NOAA scientific diver, and part-time schoolteacher contributes toward her ability to effectively relay course content and the essence of snorkeling and freediving. Having graduated with a degree in Marine Science from the University of Hawaii, along with residing in the Hawaiian Islands for 10+ years, Jackie peppers her instruction with interesting facts about local ocean life. Hawaii offers the perfect learning environment for taking the plunge into Hawaii’s fascinating ocean world. Come explore new depths with Jackie, to dive deeper, longer, and safer.

Water Tip Wednesday: Belly Breathing part 1

In order to increase your breath-hold, you first need to learn how to breath. Freedivers use various breathing techniques to influence their bodies, allowing them to hold their breath for long periods of time.

Breathing and Hiking

Thrilled to have such an awesome crew show up to learn how breathing can help in activities beyond freediving. When we consciously use our breath, we can take control of our body and mind, more than most people realize. I find if funny we rely on so many external sources to trigger “happiness chemicals” in our brain, such as our TVs, phones, notifications, booze, drugs, etc. Especially since, we can change our brain just by changing our breathing.

Special thanks to Uloha for hosting this presentation and for being Oahu’s best supplier of hiking and camping gear.

ULOHA event to help you breath easier while hiking

Breathing and Hiking

You’re on a beautiful mountain hike, the wind is blowing through the trees and the birds are singing. Except you can’t hear any of that over your own huffing and puffing. Better yet, you’re trying to hide your fierce breathing from your friends. Is this something you’ve experienced? I HAVE!

Most people consider breathing to be an involuntary act, that we’re born doing naturally. Well, it is, but you can also consciously control your breathing. Conscious breathing has numerous health benefits, and will reduce that feeling of being “gased” on hikes.

Through becoming a freedive and yoga instructor, I’ve learned various breathing methods, that inadvertently improved my breath control while hiking. I’m honored to share some of these techniques with Hawaii’s hikers at ULOHA’s talk story event, on Monday, May 20, 2019. Freediving lava tube

Lava Tubing

Super fun day with some friends out in the water! Nothing like freediving through some old lava tubes. Mask got a little foggy or dare I say “voggy” 😂 but a great time nonetheless.
